Vliegen zonder schuldgevoel/ Flying without guilt

Flying without guilt

For someone committed to a sustainable lifestyle, I have a difficult guilty pleasure: I love to fly. It gives me a  sensational feeling of freedom. The sunlight is fantastic, the earth looks magnificent (especially at night ), the clouds are fascinating in shape and substance. And the descent I experience preferably with  my nose against the window in order not to miss anything. I have already traveled a lot by air.The most spectacular was  landing at Paro airport in Bhutan, which is said to be the most dangerous airport in the world. It is sandwiched between  Himalayan Mountain peaks, between which the aircraft must maneuver. While zigzagging a bit of head wind or turbulence could easily bring the plan off course. When the pilot announced the decline, it became extremely quiet in the small plane. My Swiss neighbor, a Red Cross employee on a jail inspection mission, began to tremble so heavily that I offered him my hand. In such cases I trust my guardian angel. And as so often my curiosity won over fear. Never before I have seen mountain walls coming at me so fast. Three times the plane turned away at the very last minute, and then the short runway came in sight.
I have always felt uncomfortable with my love for flying because it is the most polluting form of transport. If there were reasonable alternatives, I chose the least polluting. So for many years I traveled by bus or train from Maastricht to London, to visit my studying daughter. But sometimes the choice of air travel just is the most practical.

What do you do with your guilt feelings? You buy them off. This is a piece of cake thanks to organizations such as Greenseat and Trees for All. Both calculate the CO2 emission of your journey and offer the possibility to compensate. Trees for All does this by planting trees with your money. Greenseat invests in renewable energy projects in developing countries, such as a biogas project in Cambodia or wind mills in Vietnam. You pay about 10 euros to compensate for a ton of CO2. With the compensation fee for a return flight Amsterdam  - New York ( around 3 tons of CO2) one family in a developing country is supplied with renewable energy.

Most forms of travel have CO2 emissions. Being weighed down by it makes no sense. The motto is: travel green as much as possible and compensate for your CO2 emissions. And enjoy your trip, whether or not with your nose pressed against the window.
